Opportunities for TWAS Young Affiliates and Alumni from the Global South Offered by the Six CAS-TWAS Centers of Excellence

The CAS-TWAS Center of Excellence Workshop, held on May 8, 2024, at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics in Beijing, highlighted numerous opportunities available for young scientists from the Global South. The workshop, organized by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and The TWAS Young Affiliates Network (TYAN), featured discussions from six Centers of Excellence (CoEs) and TYAN focusing on various scientific disciplines. This workshop provided a platform for discussing the numerous programs and initiatives offered by the six CAS-TWAS Centers of Excellence aimed at supporting young scientists from the Global South.

The workshop was attended by Directors and distinguished representatives from the six CAS-TWAS Centers of Excellence (see list below), alongside other notable participants, including:

Each of the six centers is based at existing institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing.

The CAS-TWAS Centre of Excellence for Green Technology (CEGT) is based at the CAS Institute of Process Engineering.

The CAS-TWAS Centre of Excellence for Biotechnology (CoEBio) is based at the CAS Institute of Microbiology.

The CAS-TWAS Centre of Excellence for Climate and Environment Sciences (ICCES) is hosted by the CAS Institute of Atmospheric Physics.

The CAS-TWAS Centre of Excellence for Water and Environment (CEWE) is hosted by the CAS Research Centre for Eco-Environmental Sciences.

The CAS-TWAS Centre of Excellence for Emerging Infectious Disease (CEEID).

The CAS-TWAS Centre of Excellence for Space Technology for Disaster Mitigation (SDIM) hosted by the CAS Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth.

The CAS-TWAS Centers of Excellence provide a numerous of opportunities for young scientists from the Global South. Through training programs, research fellowships, innovation incubators, and international collaborations, these centers are instrumental in empowering the next generation of scientists to address global challenges. The workshop underscored the commitment of CAS-TWAS Center of Excellences and TYAN to fostering scientific excellence and innovation in developing countries, ultimately contributing to sustainable development and global scientific advancement.
